Media..
Media
The main Italian daily is the leftward-leaning La Repubblica, published in Rome.
British and other European newspapers and overseas editions of the International Herald Tribune and Wall Street Journal are readily available in big cities and at the main tourist resorts.
Television broadcasts are entirely in Italian (foreign films and shows will invariably be dubbed). Larger hotels may have satellite TV with BBC, CNN, and various European channels. BBC World Service and Voice of America can be listened to with a shortwave radio.

Health Service..
Health care in Italy is generally of a high standard, and doctors, dentists and hospital staff are often able to speak some English. Travellers from UK can claim reciprocal health care from the Italian National Health Service, but require a European Health Card.
If you are going to require specialized prescription medicines, take your own in case you cannot find the exact equivalent on the spot. Chemists (farmacia) mainly keep to normal shopping hours. Anna |
Communication..
Stamps (francobolli) can be bought at post offices and at tobacconists (tabacchi). The main post offices in big cities are generally open 24 hours a day.
International calls can be made from public phones, which all use phone cards (scheda telefonica). You have to tear off the corner before you first use them. Always happy with the latest fashions, the Italians have taken to mobile phones, faxes and e-mail with gusto, and there should be little problem finding these services available if you need them.
The country code for Italy if you are calling from abroad is 39. All Italian phone numbers begin with a 0, which has to be dialled whether you are calling from inside or outside the country. Contact Italian directory enquiries (tel. 12) for further information.
To call overseas from Italy, dial 00, the country code (1 for US and Canada, 44 for UK), then the area code and the local number.

Climate..
Summer in Italy can be stiflingly hot; naturally, the further south, the hotter it will be. Probably the best time to visit is either spring or autumn, when there are fewer tourists to compete with, and the climate is consistently mild. In both these seasons, though, be prepared for some rain.

Journey through the Etruscan world...
It is enchanting to follow the Etruscan route. The itinerary develops along the Umbrian-Casentinese regional road(n-71) from Cortona to Castel Focognano. Two Arezzo Valleys keep the Etruscan vestigies: Valdichiana and Casentino.
